Welcome to Write or Die Wednesdays: A Writer's Link-Up! We are Vashelle and Mia inviting you to partake in some creative writing with us every other week.
If you are new to this link-up and are wondering what Write or Die is all about, check it out here!
The last WODW link-up had us flexing our creativity, sharing memories dear to our hearts, and for one creative writer, writing about what they DIDN'T write about! That's one way to git 'er done! :)
Just a reminder: Write or Die Wednesdays is now a biweekly link up. The benefits for YOU: More time to brainstorm your posts and link up. If you get busy one week, there's still the 2nd week to take advantage of and write your post. The benefits for US: More time to promote and (hopefully) grow the link up, as well as allow us time to focus on our secret project. Aside from the frequency of the link up, nothing else is changing. You still get thought-provoking prompts and the chance to flex your writing muscles. Don't touch that dial! :)
Today's prompt is the word below:
We can't wait to read your posts. Happy writing!!
P.S. Have you joined the Write or Die Book Club yet? It's a quarterly book club focused on books about writing, creativity, inspiration, etc. We hope you'll join us! We're currently discussing Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott and there's still plenty of time to read the book. Also, we've begun taking suggestions for the next reading selection! Tell us what you'd like to read! Click on the image below to join :)
Claire looked out her window and her heart thumped with joy upon seeing the fog. She put on her coat and slipped out of the house. She loved her morning walks when the fog rolled in from the sea. The fog gave her a cloak of anonymity as she wandered the streets, confident that no one would recognize her.
The fog also meant that she could visit Eric without being discovered. She lived for those days when they could steal a few moments of happiness together. She increased her pace, excited at the thought of seeing his face. She reached his door and knocked softly, a small smile on her lips. Today was no ordinary day - she had important news to share with him.
She waited a few moments but he didn't answer. She knocked again, a little louder. Finally she heard footsteps approach the door and it opened a crack. Claire stood there, confused, peering into the crack, but not able to see anything.
"Who are you?" a woman asked.
Claire stepped back in surprise. "I'm... Claire. Where is Eric?"
"Eric? There is no one here by that name, I'm afraid," the woman replied.
"What? No, that can't be right. Eric does live here. I've visited him here before. Where is he? Who are you?" Claire asked, becoming afraid and angry at the same time.
"I already told you, I don't know any Eric, you must have the wrong address." And with that, the woman slammed the door shut.
Claire stood there for a few moments, still confused, not knowing if she should knock again or wait or simply go home. She was so confused and only wanted to see Eric and feel his comforting arms around her. She turned around and looked up and down the street, trying to see if Eric was waiting for her somewhere. But she couldn't see anything through the thick fog. With a sigh, she decided to head home and figure it all out later.
She walked home slowly, her head a mess of emotions and questions. Where is he? Who was that woman? She was lost in thought when someone grabbed her arm. She quickly turned and then bit back a scream when she realized it was Eric.
"Eric! I went to see you and some woman answered the door and said she didn't know who you were! What is going on?"
Eric didn't answer right away. He was looking at Claire with a strange expression in his eyes.
"I've visited you there dozens of times. What did she mean?" Claire asked.
"It's hard to explain, Claire. Let's go somewhere and talk." He led her to a nearby park and sat down on a bench.
Before he could say anything, Claire said, "First, I have something to tell you, something important, Eric. I am not sure there's any proper way to have this conversation, so I'll just say it. I'm pregnant."
Eric didn't respond. "Did you hear me? Don't you have anything to say?" Claire asked.
He pulled her into his arms. "You're sure?"
"Positive," she responded. He kissed her softly.
"Claire, that's wonderful news. Truly. But before we discuss that, there's something I have to tell you. Something that is going to upset you. But I'm not who you think I am."
"What does that even mean?" Claire asked, utterly confused. "What is going on? You owe me an explanation."
"You're right, I do. Please just know that I love you, Claire. No matter what. You know that, right?"
Claire nodded. "Yes, I know that. I love you, too."
Eric took a deep breath. He turned and looked away for a moment. When he turned back, Claire let out a bloodcurdling scream. She jumped up and ran. Eric sat there for a moment, filled with sadness, watching her go with eyes that glowed blood red.
