Read All About It: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

I finished reading "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan a few days ago. It's the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I was really looking forward to it because I love YA books and I also love books that are in a series because you get to follow the journey of the characters beyond the one book.
Here's the synopsis from Goodreads:

"Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school... again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus' master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus' stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves."

BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front): Eh. I wasn't really a fan. 2 out of 5 stars.

I'm sad to report that I didn't really like it. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a terrible book or anything. But I found so many similarities to the Harry Potter series that it almost felt like this book was trying (and kinda failing) at living up to the awesome-sauce-ness that is Harry Potter.

Here's why I didn't like it:

  • Again, the similar, but not-as-good, storyline to Harry Potter. Evil guardians - Smelly Gabe the step-dad vs. The Dursleys. Wise female friend and lovable screwup male friend - Annabeth and Grover vs. Hermione and Ron. Everyone being afraid of saying the name of some evil wizard/Greek God. I mean, come on.

Have you read this book? What did you think?
And what have you read lately that you liked? Leave me some suggestions!
