You're Hot When It's Cold, You're Yes When It's No

Mary, Mary, quite contrary.  You know Mary.  That person who has an opposite opinion to anything you say.  It doesn't matter what the subject is. Me: "It's a wonderful day to be alive." Mary: "Eh. What's so great about it?" Me: "You're right, what an awful day." Mary: "Eh. It's not so bad."

Shut your face, Mary.  Please.  I'm tired of you pissing on my parade.  Shitting on my sunshine.  Wrecking my rainbow.  The whole world doesn't revolve around you and cloud of doom and gloom.  I know you think your face might crack if you actually smile, but trust me, it would be an improvement to your overall appearance.

Anyway, end rant.  I recently participated in the Preview to Summer book swap and was partnered with Regina from Floating in the Sea of Gigi.  She was so thoughtful and not only sent me some great books, but also included some goodies for my boys.  Little things like that just touch my heart.  Here's my loot:

Thank you so much, Regina! I can't wait to delve into these books. I've been especially wanting to read Elizabeth I for awhile. :)

When You Say Pickle, I say...

Today's post is brought to you by the word pickle. (Thanks, Lindsay, for the suggestion!)

When somebody says "pickle", what's the first thing that comes to mind?  Usually people automatically say something about a pregnant woman's cravings (pickles and ice cream), am I right?

Well, I personally never craved pickles and ice cream with either pregnancy.  Or any pickles at all for that matter.  I had terrible morning sickness with both pregnancies. Especially with Dom, I  was nauseous up until I was 7 or 8 months along.  So there were only a few things that I could tolerate eating.  Don't judge me. This is what I ate:

YUMMMMM.  I don't ever want to be pregnant again, but man, I could go for these items right about now, haha.  Shh, don't tell hubs, he might have a panic attack thinking I'm pregnant again. ;)

My fellow moms out there - what were some things you craved while you were pregnant?

Mixed Feelings

My step-dad is in the hospital.  He blacked out the other day and fell and cut his eye.  He didn't even remember falling.  He felt dizzy the rest of the day.  My mom was worried about him, but he refused to go to the hospital or see a doctor.  The next day he was better, so they didn't worry about it too much.  But yesterday, when she got home from work, he could barely walk and he couldn't talk at all. She rushed him off to the hospital and he's still there now.  His blood pressure was through the roof.  She said he hasn't improved, he barely even knows she's there.  He had a stroke years ago, when I was very young, and it left him semi-paralyzed on his right side.  So of course she's worried that he's had another stroke.

I write all this not to gain sympathy or attention.  Those things have never interested me.  I write it because it's hard for me to come to terms with my feelings.  He and I have never been close, save for when I was very little, maybe 3 or 4.  He has always been good to my mother, but he treated my father and me very poorly through the years.  I'm not sure if it was resentment because my dad and I are so close, or if I'm just the "baggage" he had to put up with when he married my mom, but we just never really had a good relationship. He just met my children a few months ago (they're 4 and 2), so that probably gives a better perspective of our relationship.  But my kids adore him. They always ask about him and want to go over and visit. And it hurts my heart to think how sad they'll be if something happens to him.  And I know my mom would be devastated.

But what would I feel? Mostly regret, I guess, at the way things turned out.  At time wasted and things left unsaid.  And to wonder if perhaps meeting my kids was a sort of olive branch, that maybe he was reaching out to me in the only way he knew how.

I guess I care more than I'm willing to admit to myself.

Plants are creepy

So you may not know this about me... but I really don't like plants.  Now, this doesn't include flowers, I love flowers (hint, hint Charles).  Besides, flowers have already been hacked off from the plant itself, so they no longer pose any kind of threat.  But any kind of non-flower plant makes me itchy.  Not in a "I'm allergic" kind of itchy... but in the "that plant creeps me out" kind of itchy.

I mean, plants may not have large, complex brains like we do.  But... they are alive.  They need water and air just like we do.  They're basically like super-unintelligent small green people.  And they sit there with their little judge-y roots and leaves, wanting you to feed it, and sing to it, and prune it, or whatever the heck you do with plants.

I have this fear that one day plants will take over the world.  I mean, if left unchecked, a small patch of weeds will take over your whole yard, right?  Imagine what would happen if nobody paid any attention to these "harmless" plants and then BAM!

Just sayin.

Well THAT Was Embarrassing...

*disclaimer - this post is about LADY PARTS. You're welcome.

Ladies, let me just start out by saying that we go through a whole hell of a lot in our lives, don't we?  Just being women entails a whole slew of things that could be described as unpleasant.  Let me list them out for you, because I know you're dying to relive all of this along with me:

-Constantly having to shave various areas (aka operation kill Sasquatch)
-Getting your period every month - Just... why?
-Not getting your period #ohshingle
-Giving birth (aka passing watermelons through a straw)
-Mammograms (aka making boob pancakes)
-Pap smears

Oh pap smears.  So, I think you know where I'm headed with this.  Last week, I had to go to the gynecologist for my annual exam and pap smear.  Definitely not something I look forward to every year, but I know it's important.  Yet also annoying.

I knew it would be off to a rocky start when the nurse tells me to take off my bra, but leave my shirt on. Wtf? Do you know how weird that is? This is what I was wearing...

Awk...ward. All dressed up and nowhere for your boobs to go.

So the doctor finally comes in.  We do a little chit chatting, she asks me some questions, the usual.  Then we get down to business.  Lady business.  I've assumed the position, feet in stirrups, the whole 9 yards. Then, out of nowhere, with her face like 5 inches from my you-know-what, she asks, "Did Dr. P. deliver your last baby?"

My heart starts pounding, and I'm freaking out for no reason. It's not like she asked me if I like scary movies. But I say, "Umm... yes he did." And she says "Yea, I thought so." DUDE! How could she tell? Did he leave a calling card?  Did he carve his initials down there? "Dr P. was here"... I mean, what in the holy heck?

Of course now I'm so freaking curious, I need to know what the heck she was seeing!

Does this crap only happen to me???

When You Say Cat, I Say....

Last week, I asked my lovely Facebook and Twitter peeps to help me out by sending me a word, any word at all.  The reason? Well, I wanted to try something new and find new inspiration for the blog and my writing.  Thank you all so much to everyone who helped out.

So, today's post is brought to you by the word cat.
(Thanks, Megan, for the suggestion!)

via

I'm definitely more of a cat person than a dog person.  I think cats suit my personality -- grumpy and solitary, haha.  Dogs are so rambunctious sometimes and just make me crazy.  BUT alas, my son is allergic to cats and my hubby is a diehard dog person.  So, I guess I'm outnumbered.

I had a cat when I was very little, probably 4 or 5.  His name was Randy and he was a cute little orange and white tabby cat.  I would dress that poor cat up all the time and drag him out of whatever hiding place he was in and make him play with me. haha. He was a good sport, though, definitely not a grumpy cat.  He'd sit on my lap for hours and just purr his little heart out.  I loved cats so much that I even nicknamed my step-dad Kitty Cat because when I first met him, he had several cats at his place and I thought I was in cat heaven playing with all of them.

Of course, this story doesn't have a happy ending.  I had to give Randy away because we were moving out of our townhouse and into a bigger home and my mom wouldn't let me bring him. Don't ask me why, it didn't make sense to me when I was 5 and doesn't make sense to me now.  But my mom is a whole other story for another day.

Anyway, here's a poem I wrote for Randy:

How happy you made me, oh Randy //
Well you came and you gave without taking //
And I sent you away, oh Randy

What? #barrymanilowcansuckit

I'd love it if you suggested a word for me! I might use it in a post. Keep it clean, people. :) Ciao!
