When You Say Flying, I Say...

Today's post is brought to you by the word "flying." (Thanks, Andrea, for the suggestion!)

You may not know this about me, but I'm deathly afraid of flying on airplanes.  Although, I wasn't when I was a kid.  I used to love wearing the little headphones and watching the in-flight movies and eating the peanuts.  It never scared me.

After 9/11, I became increasingly fearful of flying anywhere. You know, you always hear people say that you're more likely to die in a car crash than a plane crash.  But to me, I feel like at least in a car, you (in most cases) have a shot to try and avoid an accident. To swerve out of the way or slam on the brakes or hope that the seat belts and airbags and crash-safety frames do the job. But in a plane, there's nothing you can really do if some whack job decides to hijack it or if there's engine failure.  You're a million miles up in the sky and there is nothing you can do to prevent it from crashing.  And if it does crash, there's a 99.99% chance that you will die.

That creeps me out just thinking about it.  To me, if you can't get there by car, boat, or train, forget it. Don't go! Now, I'll admit that I've been to some pretty awesome places by plane. Florida.  Hawaii.  Thailand. And those trips gave me some great memories that I will never forget.  But... thinking about it now, I just can't do it. If that means missing out on seeing some exotic locations... you know, I'm OK with that.  There are plenty of places in the U.S. that I haven't been that are within driving distance or accessible by train. I'd prefer to keep my feet on solid ground, thankyouverymuch

Do you hate flying, too? Or are you a constant traveler and think I'm completely irrational? :) Share in the comments below, I always love to hear from you.  Even if you're telling me I'm a huge dork. xo

  1. I get a little anxiety when I fly, it has gotten better over time.

  2. I both hate and love flying because I do get nervous and think about all the "what ifs" every time I fly, but I've never had any issues flying either. We're going to fly and drive this fall with Quinn for the first time. With a layover each way and the drive is five hours. I'm kind of excited, but also incredibly nervous to travel that much with a 2 year old.

  3. I think we all have fears that may seem irrational to others. I think you have the right to feel that way. I am deathly afraid of being in contact with bed hubby and I almost cancelled our vacation to Vegas two years ago because I was terrified that our hotel was going to be infested with them.....I admit I do get nervous being on a plane though. I tend to take a sleeping pill or anxiety pill when we fly so I can relax.

  4. I love flying =)
I even love airports lol. Maybe I'm weird? The only thing that I really don't like about being on an airplane is GERMS. Every time someone coughs or sneezes I imagine all those nasty germ particles floating around and being breathed in be everyone else. Gross!
