Fall Weather is Coming! Are you Prepared?

Hey there, peoples!  I do love Fall weather.  Have I mentioned that?  Maybe just a few times?  :)  But sometimes, the weather during Fall can take a dangerous turn.  My awesome friend Jennifer from Survive the Odds is here to tell you how you can prepare... and if you stick around to the very end, you might just win something!  Take it away, Jennifer!

My name is Jennifer and I believe I have the opposite of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I literally jump for joy when I see that the temperatures will be dropping and do the running man when I hear that snow is in the forecast. I know I am not alone in this but everyone around me seems to despise the fall and winter weather.

[Mia edit: OK, you guys, I just have to do it.  Please join me in doing the running man for a minute. You know you want to.  And it's Jennifer's fault for bringing it up! haha! Here's a video if you don't know how (but I might talk about you a little).

OK, sorry Jennifer... please continue! :)]

This may be exciting to me as I grew up in Savannah, Georgia where we had extreme heat and humidity for summer and mild heat and a breath-like breeze in the “winter”. We could very easily wear shorts on Christmas morning and not once did I ever get a snow day. The only time we got let out of school early was if the air conditioners went out. Boring!

Bring on the fall, bring on the winter! If I had to choose though, my favorite is fall. Long-sleeved shirts, light jackets, a whip of cold breeze in the air, open windows, the smell of burning leaves ahhhhh it just fills me with delight. A lot of people consider it fall when Starbucks has their Pumpkin Spiced Latte, but I consider it fall when I can open my windows and take a nap on the couch with a slight breeze coming through. HEAVEN!

So other than the temperatures I cannot hide my real love for this time of year. It is the perfect combination of weather events. Hurricane season is still in full-effect and will shortly be followed by blizzards and power outages. Why in the world does she like that you might ask? Other than my being crazy, I also love weather events. Ever since I was a young child I would track weather events and school my whole family on how to prepare and ultimately survive the possible disasters. This did not fade as I grew up. If you want to know what to do in a potential disaster, not only weather-related, then I am your girl.

Let me make it clear, I do not enjoy the actual disaster and devastation disasters can cause, but I enjoy the preparation aspect and getting people prepared. So much so that I even have my own side business selling emergency preparedness gear. I am a huge advocate for emergency preparedness and not just because I sell the stuff. Living in the world we live in today it is paramount to be prepared for anything. I’m not saying go all “Doomsday Preppers” or anything, but take responsibility for your own survival. Unfortunately the government would take days if not weeks to get to people in the event of a large-scale event, take for example Hurricane Katrina.

So all in all I love love love the fall. I’m going to give this blog back over to Mia (hee hee, it’s funny to call her that because I know her as Maria). But before I leave, I am going to give away a free Survival Mini for Children.  Leave a comment below about how your family prepares for disasters and I will randomly pick a winner. Once a winner has been announced I will have you send me your mailing address.

And woohoo follow us on Facebook here and tell us Mia sent you). :)

Thanks so much, Jennifer, and sorry to hijack your post for an impromptu dance session, but I believe it was necessary. :)  Hope you guys visit her shop and check out the awesome survival gear she has for sale, as well as preparedness tips for emergencies.  And stay safe! Ciao!

  1. I totally agree and totally wrote a post about this once! -

I even mentioned 'Doomsday Preppers' - ha! :)

We just try to be mindful of storing up food, water, and supplies that we might need in case of a disaster, and we have 'bugout bags' in case of an emergency.

  2. Haha. I love it the Running Man. I have a friend who swears that that move is his on the dancefloor!

  3. "survival" of the cold and winter for me is a bit superficial...I stockpile hot chocolate of every variety (I consider myself a gourmet...ha). So...yup, that's all I do to prepare! :)

Roses are red, violets are blue, you know what's awesome? Getting comments from YOU!
